Rodents on islands get larger because stress-tolerant individuals are larger, mature earlier, and produce more offspring than stress-intolerant individuals. This means larger individuals soon come to outnumber smaller ones over time – not because of plentiful resources or lack of predators – but simply because they reproduce faster.
